The Caucasus region is a mountain range lying between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, considered part of the natural boundary between Europe and Asia. Four countries, all part of the former Soviet Union, occupy this region: Russia in the Northern Caucasus, and Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia in the Southern Caucasus. These isolated and ancient lands are one of the world's most ethnically diverse regions, containing more than 60 languages from five distinct language families, giving the region an astounding cultural diversity.
As the Great Silk Road passed through the ancient Persian Empire, a branch from Tabriz went north through the Caucasus towards Russia. This tour will follow this route, starting from Tehran, formerly the minor Silk Road city of Rey, to Tabriz, stopping at some of the less-visited parts of Iran, including the Assassin’s Castle of Alamut; Takht-e Soleiman, the ancient spiritual centre of the Zoroastrian religion; and the Mongol monuments of Soltaniyeh. As we head north from Tabriz, the influence of the Christian Armenians becomes apparent; we cross the border into this remnant state of a proud millennia-old civilization, the first state to give Christianity the status of an officially accepted religion.
Continuing northwards, we cross into Georgia, the lush green heart of the Caucasus, and follow the ancient road now known as the Georgia Military Highway to the Russian border. With its fabulous cuisine and culture, diverse landscapes and a wealth of ancient mosques, churches, monasteries and cave cities, this is a part of the world truly like no other.
